Verizon Communications was formed in 1983 as Bell Atlantic as part of the 1984 breakup into seven Baby Bells.Prior to its transformation into Verizon, Bell Atlantic had merged with another Regional Bell Operating Company, NYNEX, in 1997. The name is a portmanteau of veritas and horizon.The company's headquarters are located at Basking Ridge, N.J., Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) and Vodafone (NYSE and LSE: VOD) Verizon Wireless acquired Alltel in January 2009 in a deal valued at $28.1 Billion to become the largest wireless carrier in the United States, with 89 million subscribers. It was one of the first to offer a 3G network, a music store, and GPS services, and it launched the first MediaFlo mobile TV network for a carrier. Verison has grown rapidly over the last few years.
